Thailand to Introduce Automated Criminal Checks for Taxi Drivers by Mid-2026

Thailand is preparing to introduce a new digital system that will automatically screen applicants for commercial driving licences against police records.

Starting from around July 2026, individuals applying for or renewing licences for public and commercial transport will undergo automatic background checks. The initiative is part of a data integration project between the Department of Land Transport (DLT) and the Royal Thai Police (RTP).

Digital integration of databases

Following earlier integration with healthcare systems, the DLT is now working to connect its database with police records. Once the system is fully operational, applicants will no longer need to provide a separate police clearance certificate — checks will be conducted automatically.

Authorities announced that a memorandum of understanding between the two agencies is expected to be signed before the Songkran holiday period. After that, the system is scheduled to be ready within 90 days.

Scope of the new rules

At this stage, the changes will apply only to drivers of public and commercial transport, such as taxi and ride-hailing services. There has been no confirmation that the measure will extend to private vehicle licences, although technically it could be possible.

Recent regulatory updates already require drivers working with platforms like Grab to hold a specific type of licence designated for public transport operators.

Broader digital reforms

This initiative is part of a wider effort to modernize driver screening procedures. The DLT has also begun integrating systems with the Ministry of Public Health to digitize medical fitness checks.

Under the upcoming changes, applicants will be able to complete vision and reaction tests at certified medical facilities instead of visiting DLT offices. Results will be shared electronically between institutions.

The launch of this medical integration system is also expected by mid-2026.
