Thailand Plans Phuket–Krabi Seaplane Route to Boost Luxury Tourism

Thailand is moving forward with plans to launch a seaplane service between Phuket and Krabi by the end of 2026, aiming to improve travel links across the Andaman region and attract more high-spending visitors.

According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Phiriswattana, the initiative forms part of a broader strategy led by Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul to strengthen transportation networks and support Thailand’s ambition of becoming a regional aviation hub.

The planned seaplane route will offer a faster and more convenient way to travel between major tourism destinations in southern Thailand, particularly benefiting international travelers seeking premium transport options.

Krabi International Airport has been selected as the pilot location for the project. Authorities plan to develop the airport into an “Airport for Regional Development,” integrating air transport with marine connections and island tourism services.

Trial flights between Krabi and Phuket are expected to begin before the end of the year. Officials view the route as an important step in modernizing Thailand’s aviation infrastructure and a potential model for similar projects in other coastal provinces.

Deputy Transport Minister Pattaraphong Praphatprasit recently visited Krabi International Airport to review preparations and discuss the project with government agencies and private-sector representatives involved in the development.

To coordinate implementation, the Ministry of Transport is establishing a special integration committee that will include government officials, aviation experts, and private operators. One of its key responsibilities will be ensuring compliance with aviation safety standards.

Authorities believe the project could deliver long-term benefits to the tourism sector while strengthening Thailand’s competitiveness as a travel destination. In addition to improving visitor mobility, the initiative is expected to support businesses connected to aviation, hospitality, restaurants, maritime services, emergency medical transport, and marine security, while creating jobs and generating local income.

The announcement follows earlier plans to introduce seaplane operations in Trang Province through cooperation between the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and private operators Siam Seaplane and Thai Seaplane. That project was initially expected to begin operations in 2026, although no recent progress updates have been released.
