Thailand Braces for Rainy Season Shift as Low Season Nears Mid-May

Thailand is approaching the end of its high tourism season, with meteorologists warning that a seasonal transition could begin as early as mid-May. Phuket, in particular, is expected to feel the shift as prevailing winds change direction and rainfall becomes more frequent.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), the recent increase in rainfall across southern provinces does not yet signal the official start of the rainy season. In contrast, northern and central parts of the country are still experiencing typical hot-season conditions.

Forecasters indicate that early signs of a wind shift may appear between May 8 and 12. The period from May 15 to 17 is expected to mark a transitional phase, often referred to as the pre-monsoon period, when weather patterns gradually move from dry heat to sustained rainfall.

The TMD will formally declare the start of the rainy season once all meteorological indicators align. Until then, conditions may remain mixed across different regions of the country.

Regardless of the official announcement, May 15 already marks a seasonal turning point for marine national parks. Popular destinations such as the Similan Islands and the Surin archipelago will close to visitors for approximately five months. The closure is intended to ensure safety during rough sea conditions and to allow marine ecosystems to recover after months of heavy tourist activity.
