Surge in Dine-and-Dash Incidents by Foreign Tourists Sparks Concern in Phuket

A series of dine-and-dash incidents involving foreign tourists unfolded across Phuket over a single weekend, alarming restaurant owners and prompting calls for stricter enforcement.

The first case took place on May 2 and was later shared online by a restaurant owner. According to her account, two foreign customers ordered simple dishes—fried rice and stir-fried noodles without meat. Near the end of their meal, they complained about allegedly finding an insect in the food.

The owner immediately apologized and offered to waive the bill. However, after checking CCTV footage, she suspected the complaint had been staged. The insect appeared dry and intact, indicating it had not been cooked with the meal. The restaurateur, who said she has been in business for over two decades, noted she had never encountered such a situation before and would have willingly provided a free meal if asked directly.

Later the same day, another incident involved a foreign couple accused of presenting a fake bank transfer receipt to avoid paying. Local vendors claimed the pair had used similar tactics at multiple eateries across the island. In the reported case in Patong, the couple reportedly left quickly after showing the false proof of payment. It remains unclear whether any formal complaints have been filed.

A third case surfaced online the following evening via a social media post. It showed a foreign couple refusing to settle their bill at a street food stall. Video footage captured the man acting aggressively toward vendors and even spitting before leaving, while his companion reportedly made an offensive gesture.

Residents emphasized that all three incidents were clearly documented through CCTV and eyewitness accounts. Many are urging authorities to identify those responsible and take legal action.

So far, there have been no official updates on investigations or possible charges related to these cases.
