Thailand recorded strong tourism performance during the Songkran Festival 2026, with figures surpassing expectations nationwide between April 11 and 15, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

The festival is expected to generate more than US$909 million in total revenue, marking a 6% increase compared to the previous year. This growth highlights continued confidence among both domestic and international travelers and reinforces Songkran’s status as a globally recognized cultural event.
In Bangkok, the flagship Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026 held at Benjakitti Park attracted over 108,000 visitors within three days, including a nearly even split between Thai and international guests. The event alone generated an estimated US$8.5 million in economic activity. Another major event, the Saneh Art by Songkran Festival at Lumphini Park, also saw strong attendance, welcoming more than 94,000 visitors.
Southern Thailand reported steady tourism activity as well. The Sadao border checkpoint in Songkhla province recorded more than 36,000 crossings between April 10 and 12, primarily by Malaysian travelers. Hotel occupancy rates averaged around 80%, with approximately 70,000 arrivals contributing an estimated US$21 million to the local economy.

In the deep South, border towns such as Betong in Yala and Su-ngai Kolok in Narathiwat extended celebrations into nighttime events, helping position these areas as emerging destinations for cultural and evening tourism.
Elsewhere, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya remained a major attraction, particularly with its popular “Songkran with Elephants” event. Across northern and northeastern regions, traditional customs—including water-pouring rituals over Buddha statues, cultural parades, and Rot Nam Dam Hua ceremonies—were actively integrated into the celebrations, offering visitors a deeper cultural experience.
Dedicated water-play zones across the country drew large crowds, combining festive entertainment with local traditions and community participation.

International arrivals during the festival period are projected to reach around 500,000 visitors, a 4% increase year-on-year, generating approximately US$245 million. Meanwhile, domestic travel is expected to total 5.96 million trips, up 7%, contributing roughly US$647 million in revenue.
Songkran continues to play a vital role in Thailand’s tourism economy, supporting income distribution across regions and strengthening the country’s global image as a premier destination for cultural tourism. Although the official festival period ends on April 15, celebrations in some destinations, including Pattaya, will continue, helping to sustain travel momentum beyond the main holiday.
