Phuket Woman Allegedly Loses Gold and Cash to Moroccan Man Met on Dating App

A Thai woman in Phuket has reportedly lost more than 140,000 baht in gold and cash after a Moroccan man she met through a dating application allegedly stole valuables from her accommodation.

The incident was brought to public attention by a friend of the woman, who contacted a local media page and asked for the story to be shared as a warning. The report was published on September 28, although the exact date and time of the alleged theft were not disclosed.

According to the woman's friend, she met the Moroccan man through a dating application and the two had been in a relationship for around three weeks before the alleged theft.

The man was accused of taking a gold necklace valued at approximately 130,000 baht and around 8,000 baht in cash from the woman's accommodation. He was also allegedly responsible for taking another 4,000 baht in cash belonging to a Myanmar domestic worker before leaving the area.

The victim has reportedly filed a complaint with local police, although her friend said she had not received an update on the investigation.

The friend said the woman had a photograph of the Moroccan man as well as his passport details. She believed he may have already left Phuket, but police had not confirmed his whereabouts.

The incident has prompted renewed warnings about exercising caution when meeting people through social media and dating applications, particularly when relationships develop quickly.

Similar allegations have been reported elsewhere in Thailand. In January, a Thai widow in Nonthaburi sought help from a celebrity lawyer after claiming that a man she met through the Omi dating application had taken almost 500,000 baht worth of valuables from her. She said they had been together for two years before he allegedly took gold jewellery and Buddhist amulets from her home.

In another case reported that month, a Thai woman in Khon Kaen province claimed she lost around 800,000 baht to a man she had met through a dating application. She later discovered that he had married another woman and, according to her account, was living a luxury lifestyle using her money.
