Phuket to Launch New Electric Bus Route for Students in May

A new electric bus route will begin operating in Phuket on May 15, expanding the island’s growing eco-friendly public transport network.

The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO) announced the upcoming launch earlier this week, highlighting that the initiative comes at a time of rising fuel prices across Thailand. Like the three existing routes, the new line will be fully served by electric buses.

The route is being introduced as a “school line,” connecting Phuket Muslim Wittaya School in Koh Kaew with Phuket Technical College. Along the way, buses will also pass several other educational institutions, making it easier for students to commute.

The launch date coincides with the start of the new academic term in Thailand. Students will be able to use the service free of charge, while regular passengers will pay a flat fare of 15 baht.

Currently, PPAO operates three electric bus routes across the island:

• Yellow Line: Saphan Hin to Central Phuket

• Red Line: Chalong Pier to SuperCheap store

• Green Line: Rassada Pier to Kathu School No. 2

In addition, the organization has reiterated plans to introduce another electric bus route linking Phuket International Airport with Rawai Pier via Chalong. This service is expected to launch in early June 2026.

The continued expansion of electric transport reflects Phuket’s efforts to provide affordable and environmentally friendly mobility options, especially amid ongoing fluctuations in fuel prices.
