Phuket Suspends Waste Deliveries After Landfill Fire Sparks Emergency Measures

Authorities in Phuket have called for a temporary halt to waste deliveries across the province following a fire at the main landfill site.

Phuket City Municipality announced that all local administrative bodies and private waste operators are being asked to suspend the transportation of solid waste to the Phuket Provincial Waste Disposal Center from April 11 to April 19, 2026. The decision comes after a fire broke out at the facility on April 11 at approximately 3:00 p.m.

Officials classified the incident as a Level 2–3 emergency, prompting an immediate multi-agency response. Firefighting units from the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization, as well as Wichit and Rassada municipalities, worked together to contain the blaze. While the fire has now been brought under control and is limited to a specific area, authorities continue to monitor the site closely to prevent any flare-ups.

The situation has been further complicated by the waste incinerator’s storage zone reaching full capacity, making it impossible to accept additional garbage at this time. As a precaution, officials have decided to temporarily stop incoming waste deliveries until the facility can safely resume operations.

Authorities noted that normal services may restart before April 19 if conditions improve sooner. They stressed that the suspension is necessary to maintain safety and reduce the risk of further incidents, while also thanking local agencies and private operators for their cooperation during this period.
