Phuket Steps Up Hotel License Renewal Inspections to Improve Safety Standards

Phuket authorities have intensified inspections of hotels applying to renew their operating licences as part of a broader effort to improve safety, service quality and legal compliance across the island's hospitality sector.

Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom has instructed Deputy Governor Romdon Hayiawa and inspection teams to begin reviewing hotels undergoing the licence renewal process. The latest inspections covered six hotels in Karon.

According to Deputy Governor Romdon, the province is accelerating inspections under the governor's policy, with more than 300 hotels currently waiting for renewal of expired operating licences.

To speed up the process, officials have established three inspection teams working across Phuket's districts. The teams conduct weekly inspections while coordinating administrative procedures to help businesses complete the renewal process more efficiently.

Inspectors are verifying compliance with the Hotel Act of 2004, examining a wide range of requirements including structural safety, legal documentation, environmental standards, sanitation and security measures for guests.

Larger hotels are subject to more comprehensive assessments, particularly in areas related to environmental management and emergency preparedness. Authorities are also encouraging hotel operators to strengthen anti-drug prevention measures within their properties.

Officials said that since the current provincial administration took office, almost 100 hotels have already undergone inspections. The remaining more than 200 establishments are expected to be reviewed over the next two months.

Provincial authorities say the programme is intended to strengthen Phuket's reputation as a leading international tourism destination by ensuring high standards of safety and increasing visitor confidence in the island's accommodation sector.
