Phuket Rider Escapes Injury After Motorcycle Plunges Into Sea at Chalong Pier

A Thai motorcyclist escaped serious injury after his bike reportedly developed a throttle problem and eventually plunged into the sea from Chalong Pier in Phuket on August 20. The rider managed to jump off the motorcycle before it went into the water.

CCTV footage of the incident was shared by the Apichart Fishing Tour Facebook account. The video shows the motorcycle travelling towards Chalong Pier before continuing off the pier and falling into the sea. The person who posted the footage later told Khao Phuket that the incident happened at around 11:25am.

The video quickly attracted attention online. Some users joked about the motorcycle appearing to be “autonomous” or taking a “dive”, while others questioned whether the rider had enough experience and suggested that switching off the engine might have prevented the incident. According to the person who filmed the event, the rider had travelled through Chalong Roundabout before continuing towards the pier bridge. Fortunately, he had already jumped from the motorcycle before it reached the water.

The person who recorded the footage helped the rider and brought him to security staff at Chalong Pier. The staff arranged for him to be taken to Chalong Hospital. He suffered only minor abrasions and did not sustain serious injuries.

After speaking with the rider, the Facebook user learned that the motorcycle had been refuelled shortly before the incident. The rider reportedly felt that the throttle had become stuck, causing the motorcycle to accelerate unexpectedly and leaving him unable to control it.

The rider continued towards Chalong Roundabout, where he reportedly tried to seek assistance from police officers in the area. He also warned other motorists to move out of his way because the motorcycle was travelling at high speed and he could not bring it under control.

As the bike continued towards Chalong Pier, the rider decided to jump off before reaching the pier. The motorcycle carried on without its rider and eventually plunged into the sea, as captured by the CCTV camera.

The person who posted the footage also said he secured the motorcycle with a rope to prevent it from being carried away by the water. He planned to retrieve the vehicle once the tide had gone down.
