Phuket Residents Feel Tremors After Strong Earthquake in Indonesia

Residents across parts of Phuket reported feeling mild tremors on Saturday evening after a significant earthquake struck northern Sumatra in Indonesia.

According to the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM), the earthquake occurred at 5:54 p.m. local time on August 15. The quake registered a magnitude of 6.8 and originated at a depth of 168 kilometres near Pematangsiantar in North Sumatra. The epicenter was located at coordinates 2.98°N and 99.06°E.

Despite the considerable distance between Indonesia and Thailand, the seismic activity was noticeable in several areas of Phuket, particularly inside multi-storey buildings.

Reports of shaking were received from various parts of Phuket Town, including Saphan Hin, the Naka area, Central Phuket shopping complex, and Koh Sirey. Similar observations were reported in Kathu District, where residents living in condominiums experienced slight vibrations.

In Thalang District, some employees and travellers at Phuket International Airport also noticed the tremors, although many people said they did not feel any movement.

Authorities confirmed that the earthquake caused no injuries, deaths, or damage to buildings and infrastructure on the island.

The DDPM stated that it has coordinated with local authorities and relevant agencies to inspect high-rise buildings and assess any potential impact. Officials are also maintaining close cooperation with the Meteorological Department to monitor seismic activity and provide updates if necessary.

Emergency management teams will continue around-the-clock monitoring to ensure public safety and respond quickly should further developments occur.
