Phuket Residents Demand Crackdown on Foreign Tourists After Songkran Misconduct

Residents in Phuket are calling for stricter enforcement against foreign tourists following a series of disruptive incidents during the Songkran Festival.

The controversy escalated after a group of foreigners was detained by police in Patong on April 14. Their arrest followed the spread of a viral video showing them opening a van door and splashing water inside, targeting the driver. Authorities charged the group with causing a public nuisance and obstructing traffic.

According to police, the offences carry penalties of up to three months in prison and a fine of 10,000 baht. However, officials have not disclosed what punishment, if any, has been imposed so far.

The incident triggered a wave of complaints from both locals and tourists. Multiple videos circulated online appear to show the same group engaging in similar behaviour. In one clip, a Thai woman riding a motorcycle was splashed with water before individuals from the group poured shampoo on her head and washed her hair without her consent.

Another video shows a motorcyclist being forced to stop in the middle of the road, surrounded by the group, and repeatedly doused with water until he abandoned his vehicle and moved aside.

Additional reports suggest the group also blocked roads, pressured drivers for money, and forced passersby to join water fights. Those who refused were reportedly subjected to verbal abuse and harassment. Footage published by local media also appears to show foreigners obstructing traffic near a police checkpoint and throwing water in the area.

The incidents have sparked strong reactions on social media, with many calling for tougher legal action. Some users have urged authorities to deport those involved and place them on immigration blacklists, warning that such behaviour could damage Phuket’s reputation as a tourist destination.
