Phuket Remains Under Weather Warning as Southwest Monsoon Intensifies

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has reissued a weather warning for Phuket, cautioning residents and visitors about heavy rainfall and dangerous sea conditions expected to continue through May 18.

According to Phuket Meteorological Center (Phuket Met), the island is now fully experiencing the effects of the southwest monsoon, which officially marked the beginning of the low season on May 15.

Weather radar images throughout the day showed rain clouds moving from the southwest toward the northeast — a wind pattern typical for Phuket during the rainy season. This seasonal shift is also responsible for stronger waves and hazardous swimming conditions along the island’s west coast beaches.

In Weather Warning No. 4 (7/2026), forecasters stated that the provinces of Ranong and Phang Nga are expected to experience the most severe weather, although Phuket is also facing intense rainfall and strong winds.

Sea conditions in the Andaman Sea have already deteriorated to levels commonly associated with low-season storms. Officials warned that waves in the northern Andaman Sea are expected to reach 2 to 3 metres, while areas affected by thunderstorms could see waves exceeding 3 metres.

Phuket Met Director Wirot Leucharonttrap said all boat operators should navigate with extreme caution and avoid storm zones whenever possible.

Small boats operating in the northern Andaman Sea have been advised to remain ashore until conditions improve.

Authorities also urged the public to closely monitor weather updates and follow future warnings issued by meteorological officials.

According to Phuket Met data, Phuket recorded approximately 150 millimetres of rainfall between May 1 and May 15 alone. Total rainfall on the island since the start of the year has reached around 302 millimetres, meaning roughly half of the annual total so far fell during the first half of May.
