Phuket Orders Island-Wide Safety Inspections After Deadly Bangkok Fire

Phuket authorities have ordered a province-wide inspection of businesses and public venues following the deadly fire at a restaurant and entertainment venue in Bangkok that claimed dozens of lives.

On July 13, Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom said the tragedy, which occurred the previous night on Soi Lat Phrao 1 in Bangkok, should serve as an important warning for all provinces, including Phuket.

Although the incident did not occur on the island, the governor stressed that every government agency must use it as an opportunity to strengthen safety measures and ensure that buildings are prepared for emergencies. He also extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

According to Kerdsom, the Ministry of Interior considers public safety a top priority across all types of establishments, including entertainment venues, hotels, restaurants and other facilities open to the public.

He noted that, as one of Thailand's leading international tourism destinations, Phuket has a responsibility to maintain strict compliance with safety regulations in order to protect both residents and visitors.

The governor has instructed all 19 local administrative organizations, together with relevant government agencies, to carry out inspections of businesses throughout the province. The frequency and scope of inspections will depend on the level of risk associated with each establishment.

Officials will examine fire prevention systems, emergency exits, firefighting equipment and overall compliance with building safety standards to ensure venues are capable of responding effectively in the event of an emergency.

In addition to inspections, authorities are preparing emergency drills and simulation exercises designed to improve the readiness of emergency personnel, local officials and rescue teams, while also verifying that all emergency equipment is fully operational.

Governor Kerdsom said the campaign follows national government and Ministry of Interior policies aimed at improving safety standards nationwide and reinforcing public confidence among residents, tourists and business operators.
