Phuket Officials Investigate Suspected Forest Encroachment in Kamala Hills

Authorities in Phuket have stepped up efforts to protect protected forest areas after launching an investigation into suspected illegal land clearing in the Kamala Hills, also known as Khao Nang Phanthurat.

The inspection took place on the afternoon of June 29 and was led by Mueang Phuket District Chief Siwatch Rawangkul. The operation brought together district officials, members of the Volunteer Defense Corps (Or Sor), provincial forestry officers, and the village head of Moo 2 in Koh Kaew Subdistrict.

The joint team responded to reports that protected forest land near the border between Kathu District and Koh Kaew had been cleared without authorization. During the inspection, officials found signs that heavy equipment had been used to level the terrain, while sections of a concrete road had also been constructed inside the forest area.

Authorities said the activities may constitute violations of Thailand's laws governing national forest reserves.

No workers or land occupants were present when officers arrived at the site. However, investigators discovered a backhoe that is believed to have been used during the clearing operation. The machine was seized as evidence, and officials documented the area before handing the case over to police investigators for further action.

Provincial authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Phuket's natural resources, stating that agencies will continue working together to prevent illegal occupation and development in protected forest areas. They added that enforcement efforts against environmental violations will remain a priority.
