Phuket Officials Dismiss Viral Pollution Claims at Tri Trang Beach

Authorities in Phuket have moved quickly to address public concern after images allegedly showing polluted seawater at Tri Trang Beach spread widely online.

Late on April 23, officials from the Office of Environmental and Pollution Control carried out an urgent nighttime inspection at the coastal area known locally as Le Hua Non in Patong.

According to their findings, the situation at the beach appeared normal. Seawater was clear, and drainage outlets showed no visible signs of contamination.

Local vendors offered additional context, suggesting that the circulating images were outdated and likely taken in mid-March, meaning they did not reflect current conditions.

Despite the reassuring results, authorities are continuing their investigation. Officials plan to review CCTV footage from nearby hotels to determine the source of the earlier discharge shown in the viral posts. If any violations are confirmed, those responsible could face legal consequences.

Under Thailand’s environmental regulations, businesses that fail to meet wastewater management standards or illegally release pollutants may be fined up to 1 million baht, with additional daily penalties of 100,000 baht until compliance is achieved. In serious cases, authorities can order an immediate halt to wastewater discharge, suspend operations, or revoke business licenses.

Officials also called on residents and business operators to report any suspected environmental issues to local authorities, including Patong Municipality and the Kathu District Office. Prompt reporting, they emphasized, plays a key role in protecting natural resources and maintaining Phuket’s reputation as a top global destination.
