Phuket Marks Mother’s Day with Nationwide Holiday and Community Events

Government offices across Phuket are closed today, August 12, as Thailand observes Mother’s Day, a national holiday held each year on the birthday of Queen Mother Sirikit.

This year’s celebrations are the first to take place without Queen Mother Sirikit herself, adding particular significance to the occasion.

Events connected with the holiday began on August 11, when Phuket launched a series of community and charitable activities dedicated to the Queen Mother. District and local authorities organised several large-scale community clean-up activities as part of the celebrations.

Mother’s Day and the celebration of Queen Sirikit’s birthday are not included among the public holidays on which alcohol sales are prohibited in Thailand. However, visitors are reminded that the occasion is closely associated with the Thai Royal Family and two of its most highly respected members.
