Phuket Launches Urgent Preparations for Incoming Rainy Season

Authorities in Phuket have begun urgent preparations ahead of the approaching rainy season following a directive from Governor Nirun Phongsitthithavorn.

According to local reports, all relevant government agencies and local administrative bodies have been instructed to immediately inspect and restore the island’s drainage systems to full working condition. The order emphasizes the need to ensure that Phuket is ready to handle heavy rainfall in the coming months.

Key agencies involved include the Department of Highways (DOH), the Department of Rural Roads (DRR), and the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization. Engineering teams from these departments, along with municipal authorities, are tasked with conducting on-site inspections of road networks and drainage infrastructure.

Their primary goal is to identify and remove any obstructions that could hinder water flow. This includes clearing blocked pipes, drains, grates, and manholes to prevent flooding during intense downpours.

Officials have confirmed that all agencies acknowledged the directive and have already started implementing the required measures. The initiative has been framed with a clear objective: to restore drainage systems so they function effectively when needed most.

Meanwhile, in Karon, a separate but related effort is underway. Engineers are assessing areas at risk of landslides near the Big Buddha Phuket hill. This location is considered particularly sensitive after a deadly landslide in 2024, which resulted in 13 fatalities. The site only recently reopened to visitors in March.

The combined efforts highlight Phuket’s push to strengthen infrastructure resilience and reduce risks to both residents and tourists during the monsoon season.
