Phuket Introduces Electric Buses to Improve Transport During Vegetarian Festival
Phuket authorities have introduced electric public buses to improve transport options for residents and visitors during the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival. The initiative is being implemented by the provincial administration in cooperation with the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO) as part of wider efforts to modernize public transport, reduce pollution and support the island’s Green City and Smart City goals.

The launch ceremony took place in front of Phuket Provincial Hall. It was attended by Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom, Deputy Governor Suwit Phansengiam, PPAO President Rewat Areerob and Phuket Transport Chief Atcha Buachan. The event marked the start of the new EV bus service, intended to provide a more environmentally friendly and convenient way to travel during one of the island’s major cultural celebrations.
Rewat Areerob said the PPAO had long prioritized the development of public transportation. Phuket previously relied on local Po Thong buses operating along three routes. During his first term as PPAO president, from 2021 to 2024, the administration expanded its transport plans to align with the province’s broader development strategy.

He said the aim was to create a system that uses clean energy and smart technology while improving efficiency and meeting the needs of both local residents and tourists.
According to the information provided by the authorities, Phuket’s public transport network currently covers approximately 99% of the province.

Electric buses operate on local and inter-district routes
The province’s bus network includes two main service categories:
Category 1 — intra-district routes: Six routes served by 28 electric buses, connecting areas including Phuket Town and Patong.
Category 4 — inter-district routes: Thirteen routes, with 19 electric buses operating as part of a wider fleet of 226 vehicles.
Key connections link Phuket Town with Phuket International Airport, Patong, Karon, Kata, Rawai, Kamala and other major destinations across the island.
Passengers can check routes and service information through the Phuket Bus mobile application, which is available in Thai, English, Russian and Chinese. The app provides route numbers, bus stop locations, estimated arrival times, fares and contact details for operators.
The expansion of electric bus services forms part of Phuket’s longer-term efforts to reduce emissions, improve residents’ quality of life and make travel more convenient for visitors. By incorporating cleaner transport options into its public network, the province aims to strengthen its position as a sustainable international tourism destination.
