Phuket Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Jet Ski Operators and Nominee-Owned Businesses

Phuket authorities have stepped up inspections of the island’s jet ski industry as part of a wider campaign targeting illegal operators and businesses suspected of using nominee ownership structures.

On Saturday, July 25, Phuket Governor Chotnarin Kerdsom assigned Deputy Governor Romdon Hayiawa to oversee the operation. The inspection team included Adul Raluekmul, Director of the Phuket Regional Marine Office, senior vessel inspector Teerapong Phannak, and officers from the Marine Department.

During the operation, officials inspected jet ski businesses throughout Phuket, focusing on unlicensed vessels, operators working without the required permits, and companies suspected of concealing foreign ownership through Thai nominees.

Authorities said the campaign forms part of the province’s broader effort to eliminate nominee business arrangements that violate Thai law and create unfair competition. Officials stressed that the initiative is intended to protect national interests, improve transparency in tourism-related businesses, and strengthen confidence in Phuket’s tourism industry.

The latest inspections uncovered eight violations under the Navigation in Thai Waters Act. Legal proceedings have already been initiated against those involved.

Officials confirmed that inspections will continue on a regular basis, warning that businesses failing to comply with the law will face strict enforcement measures.

Deputy Governor Romdon Hayiawa said Phuket remains committed to ensuring that tourism businesses operate legally and fairly, adding that the campaign is designed to support legitimate operators while protecting visitors and the country's economic interests.
