Phuket Declares Emergency Zone as Landfill Fire Continues to Burn

Phuket authorities have introduced an emergency assistance zone as firefighters continue battling a persistent blaze at the municipal landfill near Saphan Hin, which has now been burning for two days.

Governor Nirut Phongsitthithavorn, together with senior provincial officials and the Phuket City mayor, visited the site at approximately 8:00 p.m. to oversee the ongoing response. The emergency designation allows for quicker deployment of resources and additional support for residents affected by smoke and potential health risks.

Although parts of the fire were initially brought under control, deep layers of compacted waste continue to smolder and reignite, making extinguishing efforts more difficult. To strengthen operations, authorities have coordinated a joint response involving multiple municipalities, pooling fire engines and personnel under a cooperative initiative.

To address water supply challenges, officials requested long-distance pumping systems capable of delivering a continuous, high-volume flow from nearby sources. Temporary pipelines are expected to be installed overnight, while teams conduct hourly assessments. The primary goal is to fully contain the fire as quickly as possible.

Air quality and the movement of smoke are being closely monitored. Emergency evacuation plans are in place for communities located downwind, with a provincial multipurpose hall prepared to serve as a temporary shelter if needed. Fire crews are expected to continue intensive water spraying for several days to eliminate hotspots and prevent reignition.

Officials confirmed that all available agencies, including municipal teams and the Royal Thai Navy, are working around the clock to control the situation, limit the spread of the fire, and reduce risks to public health.

The landfill’s coastal location and the large volume of accumulated waste continue to complicate the operation, as the material fuels the fire. Nearby residents have reported heavy smoke and strong odors affecting their daily lives. Authorities assured that emergency operations will continue non-stop until the situation is fully stabilized.
