Phuket authorities have stepped up efforts to address unsafe and disruptive tourist behavior following this year’s Songkran celebrations. Provincial leaders gathered to assess the situation and outline measures aimed at preserving safety and maintaining the island’s reputation as a secure travel destination.

The meeting, led by Deputy Governor Teerapong Chuaychoo, highlighted several recurring issues observed during the holiday period. Officials pointed to dangerous driving, speeding in residential areas, disorderly group activities, and violations of public space rules. Such behavior, they noted, not only disrupts daily life for residents but also increases the likelihood of road and maritime accidents.

In response, authorities agreed to introduce tougher enforcement and clearer penalties for those who break the rules. Future measures will focus on targeted monitoring in high-risk and heavily visited areas, along with stronger law enforcement efforts directed at both locals and tourists.

Technology is also set to play a larger role. Plans include the use of AI-powered traffic cameras capable of detecting violations at intersections in real time. At the same time, officials intend to expand multilingual awareness campaigns to better inform international visitors and migrant communities about local regulations.

The province is also urging businesses within the tourism sector, including hotels, tour agencies, and vehicle rental companies, to take a more active role in educating their customers. By providing clear guidance from the start of a visitor’s stay, authorities hope to prevent misunderstandings and reduce disruptive incidents.
