Phuket Cracks Down on Illegal Beachfront Occupation at Bang Tao

Authorities in Phuket have carried out a large-scale operation to reclaim public land illegally occupied along Bang Tao Beach in the Cherng Talay area of Thalang District.

The action, conducted on April 29, followed orders from Governor Nirun Phongsitthithavorn and Deputy Governor Adul Chuthong. The operation was led by Provincial Clerk Rungrueng Thimabutr and involved a joint task force of district officials, forestry authorities, and local administrative bodies.

Investigators found that more than five rai of beachfront land—protected under Thailand’s land and forest legislation—had been unlawfully taken over. The encroached area had been fenced off by private investors, who were reportedly charging fees for access and leasing portions of the land to third parties.

At least 16 restaurants and other structures were identified within the disputed zone. Officials documented all violations, secured the land, and began legal procedures by issuing summonses to those responsible.

Rungrueng Thimabutr stated that the operation aligns with the province’s broader policy to restore order and transparency in land use. He emphasized that public land must remain accessible for community benefit rather than private gain, adding that inspections will be expanded to other locations across the island.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to protecting natural resources and ensuring fair access to Phuket’s beaches. They also warned that future encroachments will face strict legal consequences, as the province works to maintain its standing as a leading global tourism destination.
