Phuket Committee Investigates Alleged Encroachment on Bang Tao Beach

A provincial fact-finding committee has begun an on-site investigation into allegations that sections of public beachfront land at Bang Tao Beach have been occupied by private businesses.

The inspection took place on June 2 in Thalang District and was led by Rear Admiral Praphan Srisuwipa, Deputy Director of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) in Phuket, together with Naphat Aemon, Inspector General of the Department of Provincial Administration and Acting Phuket Provincial Clerk.

The committee was established by the Phuket Governor following growing public concern over the use of beachfront land. The issue gained additional attention after local residents raised complaints directly with the Prime Minister during a visit to Phuket in early May.

During the initial survey, officials found that approximately six rai of public coastal land appeared to be occupied by commercial operations. Businesses identified in the area included restaurants, beverage vendors, massage services, and tour booking counters. According to investigators, operators claimed they were renting the land from individuals who asserted ownership rights over the property.

Rear Admiral Praphan emphasized that the committee’s current role is limited to gathering and verifying information.

“We are reviewing land boundaries, usage status, and the nature of business activities to ensure that all facts are established accurately and transparently. At this stage, the objective is not legal enforcement but the creation of a clear and reliable factual record,” he said.

Several government agencies are participating in the investigation, including the Provincial Land Office, the Royal Forest Department, local administrative bodies, the Provincial Electricity Authority, and the Provincial Waterworks Authority.

Once the fact-finding process is completed, the collected evidence will be submitted to the governor and relevant agencies, which will decide on any legal or administrative measures within their respective jurisdictions.

Officials stated that the investigation aims to protect public access to beachfront land, safeguard the rights of legitimate business operators, and ensure that public property remains available for community use.
