Phuket Bans Small Boats from Going to Sea Amid Severe Weather Warning

Thailand’s Marine Department has issued a warning for marine operators in Phuket, including a temporary ban on small boats leaving coastal areas due to worsening weather conditions expected through early June.

The notice was released by the Phuket regional office of the Marine Department and later circulated by MCOT radio. The order follows a weather advisory from the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), which warned of deteriorating conditions caused by the strengthening southwest monsoon.

According to the national forecast, rainfall is expected to intensify between May 28 and June 1, with heavy downpours forecast in several areas. Sea conditions in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are also expected to become increasingly dangerous.

Officials warned that waves in the upper Andaman Sea could reach between two and three metres, while storm zones may experience waves higher than three metres.

The Marine Department advised all vessel operators to avoid navigating through areas affected by thunderstorms and rough seas during the warning period.

Captains and crew members were also instructed to thoroughly inspect vessels and engines, ensure communication systems are operational, and prepare all required emergency and safety equipment, including life jackets, rescue devices, and fire prevention tools.

Under the order, small boats are required to remain close to shore, while vessels shorter than 10 metres are prohibited from entering open waters between May 26 and June 1.

Phuket’s local meteorological office has not yet issued a separate provincial storm alert. However, local forecasts are typically released closer to the arrival of severe weather systems affecting the island directly.

Authorities continue to urge residents, fishermen, and tourists to closely monitor weather updates and prioritize safety during the monsoon period.
