Authorities in Phuket have been instructed to accelerate flood relief efforts and develop long-term measures to address recurring flooding in Kamala subdistrict, Kathu district.

The directives followed an inspection of the area near Phuket FantaSea, where drainage problems have contributed to flooding and affected the surrounding community.

Deputy Interior Minister Worasit Liangprasit instructed the local Highway District Office and Kamala Subdistrict Administrative Organization to improve the flow of floodwater through existing canals and towards the sea.

He also plans to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning to develop sustainable drainage improvements aimed at reducing the risk of future flooding.

Soil conditions and landslide risks under review

Authorities are consulting the Department of Mineral Resources to assess local soil conditions, terrain and potential landslide risks. The findings are expected to help relevant agencies develop preventive measures and strengthen emergency preparedness.

Worasit also ordered officials to provide urgent assistance to residents affected by flooding and called for careful assessments before implementing proposed drainage measures.

He stressed that any solution must improve water drainage without diverting floodwater into neighbouring communities or creating additional difficulties for local residents.

The measures are intended to address immediate needs while supporting longer-term efforts to reduce recurring flood risks in Kamala.
