Indian Tourists Accused of Assaulting Thai Man During Early-Morning Dispute in Patong

A confrontation involving a group of Indian tourists and two Thai men in Patong early on May 12 has led to a police investigation after one local resident was reportedly injured during the incident.

According to police, the altercation took place around 4:30 a.m. near the end of Bangla Road in Patong, Phuket. Officers later responded to a report of violence at approximately 4:50 a.m.

Investigators said four Indian nationals — 37-year-old Sandeep Kumar Sunil, 39-year-old Mohammad Ajaz, and two women — were waiting for a ride booked through a mobile application to return to their accommodation.

During the wait, Sandeep allegedly sat on the hood of a grey Toyota parked beside a noodle stall. The vehicle belonged to 65-year-old vendor Sawai Moonklab, who warned the tourist not to sit on the car out of concern it could be damaged.

Police said the tourist, who was reportedly intoxicated, reacted angrily after being confronted and allegedly pushed the elderly man. A nearby resident, 44-year-old Thanakorn Maneechai, stepped in to calm the situation and prevent it from escalating further.

However, Thanakorn was then allegedly attacked by Sandeep, Mohammad Ajaz, and the two women, sustaining injuries during the confrontation.

Following the incident, both parties went to Patong Police Station to file complaints and provide statements. Thanakorn was later transported to Patong Hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness testimony before deciding on further legal action. If charges are filed, the suspects could face prosecution under Sections 295 and 296 of Thailand’s Criminal Code, which relate to assault causing physical or mental harm. Additional offenses connected to public disorder or intoxication may also be considered.

The case comes amid growing scrutiny of tourist behavior in Phuket following several recent incidents involving foreign visitors.
