Icelandic Tourist Arrested in Phuket After Allegedly Snatching Taxi Driver’s Handbag

An Icelandic tourist has been detained by police in Phuket after allegedly attempting to steal a handbag from a female taxi driver during a trip from Patong to Wichit.

The incident was reported to Patong Police Station by 39-year-old taxi driver Phitchapa at around 7pm. According to her statement, she picked up a European passenger outside Patong Hospital at approximately 9:50am and was driving him to a hotel in Wichit, located in Phuket’s Mueang district.

During the journey, the passenger allegedly grabbed her handbag, which had been placed on the front passenger seat. The bag reportedly contained cash, a mobile phone and several important personal documents.

Phitchapa told investigators that she immediately demanded the return of her belongings, but the man refused. She then stopped the vehicle and attempted to recover the bag herself. According to her account, the passenger resisted and tried to escape by opening the door and leaving the vehicle.

In an effort to attract attention, the driver repeatedly sounded the horn. Several members of the public responded and came to assist. Faced with the growing crowd, the suspect allegedly returned the handbag and its contents before fleeing on foot.

Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area and quickly launched an investigation. By 9pm the same day, officers had identified and located the suspect, a 37-year-old Icelandic national named Johann, and brought him in for questioning.

Authorities stated that the initial charge being considered is snatching. Investigators have scheduled a formal notification of charges for June 24, after which they plan to request a court-approved detention order as the legal process continues.

The incident is the latest in a series of cases involving foreign nationals on Phuket that have recently attracted public attention and sparked discussions about tourist-related crime and public safety on the island.
