Heavy Rain and High Tide Flood Roads Across Phuket

Heavy rainfall combined with a high tide caused flooding in Patong and surrounding areas of Phuket early on October 26. Water reached depths of approximately 20–30 centimetres in some locations, damaging parked vehicles and disrupting traffic.

The rain fell mainly between 1am and 2am, inundating several roads in Patong, Kathu and central Phuket. Some parked cars were damaged, while motorcycles were knocked over or carried away by the floodwater.

Several roads in Patong affected

Small cars and motorcycles were unable to pass through several flooded routes in Patong. The affected areas included Na Nai Road, Phang Mueang Sai Kor Road, Prachanukroh Road, Diamond roundabout, Bangla Road and streets surrounding Jungceylon shopping centre.

Floodwater began to recede at around 4am. However, layers of mud and silt remained on the road surfaces, making driving conditions difficult even after the water had subsided.

Patong Municipality and relevant agencies sent excavators and other equipment to the affected areas. Cleanup teams worked to remove accumulated mud, clear drainage channels, collect debris and rubbish, and wash the roads.

Temporary shelters opened for affected people

Phuket Deputy Governor Chotnarin Kirdsom said provincial authorities had arranged three temporary shelters for residents and tourists affected by the flooding.

The designated locations were Patong Municipality Office, Suwan Kiriwong School and Patong Bay Hill Hotel.

Radar observations recorded at 7.30am on October 26 by the Meteorological Centre for the West Coast of Southern Thailand showed rainfall ranging from light to very heavy across all three districts of Phuket and over the Andaman Sea.

Residents were advised to move belongings and other property to higher ground where necessary and to monitor official announcements for further updates.

At the time of reporting, neither Patong Municipality nor the Phuket provincial office had published an estimate of the damage. No injuries had been reported in connection with the overnight flooding.
