German Tourist Missing After Entering Rough Sea at Phuket’s Freedom Beach

Thai authorities have launched a search for a 30-year-old German tourist who went missing after entering the sea at Freedom Beach in Phuket on August 10. Strong winds and rough waves were reported in the area, with red warning flags displayed to alert beachgoers to dangerous conditions.

The missing tourist was identified as Jannik Jürgen Knobel, a German national. Authorities were alerted at approximately 3:49 p.m., after which police, rescue teams, local officials and disaster-response personnel began a coordinated search operation.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin ordered the Royal Forest Department to mobilise personnel and provide support for the search after receiving a report from Nikorn Sirarotchananon, director-general of the Royal Forest Department.

Search teams worked in the area until around 6 p.m., when the operation was suspended because daylight was fading and sea conditions remained dangerous. Officials said continuing the search under those conditions could put rescuers at risk. The operation was expected to resume once conditions became safer.

Authorities also assisted the missing tourist’s relatives with contacting the German Embassy in Thailand and filing a report at Karon Police Station.

Suchart instructed the relevant agencies to provide full assistance to the family and continue supporting the search while giving priority to the safety of rescue personnel.

Officials have also urged tourists and other beachgoers to take red warning flags seriously and avoid entering the sea when they are displayed, particularly during periods of strong winds and rough waves.
