Freedom Beach Temporarily Closed After Death of German Tourist

Authorities in Phuket have temporarily closed Freedom Beach following the disappearance and subsequent death of a German tourist, whose body was discovered on August 11.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin announced on August 14 that he had instructed the Royal Forest Department to enhance safety measures in the area and consider restricting public access and swimming activities. Officials formally issued the temporary closure order and related safety notice on August 11.

The decision was made to allow authorities to assess conditions and reduce risks associated with severe weather and rough seas. Officials said unpredictable conditions in the Andaman Sea could pose a significant threat to beachgoers and those participating in water-based activities.

According to Suchart, visitor safety remains the top priority during the southwest monsoon season. Weather conditions in the region continue to be unstable, with waves in storm-affected areas reaching two to three metres in height and, in some cases, even higher.

Authorities are urging both residents and tourists to closely follow official warnings and avoid entering the sea whenever red flags, strong wind advisories or severe weather alerts are in place.

Officials stressed that the closure is not permanent. Freedom Beach will be reopened once weather conditions, sea state and other safety factors return to acceptable levels for tourism and recreational activities.

The move follows similar precautionary measures elsewhere in southern Thailand. In June, Mu Ko Lanta National Park in Krabi temporarily closed several popular tourist sites after large numbers of highly venomous Portuguese man o’ war washed ashore.

Park officials warned that these marine creatures remain dangerous even after death, as their tentacles can continue releasing venom when stranded on beaches.
