Foreign Teenagers Arrested After Property Damage Incident in Phuket Old Town

Police in Phuket detained four foreign teenagers after they allegedly stole and damaged decorative property outside a local resident’s home in Phuket Old Town.

The incident came to public attention after the Phuket Times Facebook page published CCTV footage showing the group on Phang Nga Road, one of the main streets in the historic district of Phuket Town.

According to the footage, one of the teenagers removed a decorative lamp shade hanging outside a house before walking away with his friends. The suspect was seen wearing a black T-shirt, white shorts, and trainers. The damaged lamp shade was later discovered broken near the scene.

Officers from Mueang Phuket Police Station later confirmed that all four suspects had been arrested. Police located the teenagers at accommodation in Thalang district before bringing them in for questioning.

Authorities said the group consisted of four foreign nationals aged between 15 and 18 years old. During questioning, the teenagers reportedly admitted to their actions and told police they had acted carelessly and without thinking about the consequences.

Police did not reveal what charges or penalties the group may face, which triggered criticism from some local residents online.

Many commenters called for tougher measures against foreign visitors involved in vandalism or disruptive behaviour, arguing that stricter enforcement would help protect local communities and encourage greater respect for public and private property in Phuket.

Some social media users pointed out that the case could potentially fall under Thailand’s laws covering theft committed at night, offences that may carry prison sentences ranging from one to five years, fines between 20,000 and 100,000 baht, or both.

Others speculated that the teenagers might receive only small fines before being released.

The case follows several recent incidents involving foreign nationals damaging or stealing property in Thailand. Last year, a foreign man was captured on CCTV stealing a Thai national flag outside an office in Phuket, while another recent incident at Suvarnabhumi Airport involved a Chinese tourist damaging automated immigration gates and later being ordered to pay significant compensation.
