Phuket has officially welcomed a new diplomatic presence with the opening of Finland’s honorary consulate on the island.

The inauguration ceremony took place on the morning of April 21, attended by Phuket Governor Nirun Phongsitthithavorn along with other local officials.
The consulate is located in Phuket Town on Mae Luan Road, opposite the Muang Phuket District Office. However, its formal address is listed as 265 Yaowarat Road, Talad Nuea.

As with similar institutions, the honorary consulate does not function as a full embassy or consulate. Instead, it serves as a local support point, assisting Finnish nationals in dealing with Thai authorities and coordinating with Finland’s diplomatic missions.
Honorary consuls are often local residents rather than career diplomats, and the role is typically voluntary and unpaid.
According to officials, the new office aims to make travel and long-term stays easier for Finnish citizens visiting or living in Phuket. It is also expected to strengthen economic, trade, and cultural ties between Thailand and Finland.
Local authorities emphasized that the initiative reflects growing international connections and Phuket’s importance as a global destination for both tourism and expatriate communities.
