Chinese Traveler Caught Smuggling Cuban Cigars Worth 1.2 Million Baht into Thailand

A Chinese national was arrested at Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport after allegedly attempting to bring a large shipment of Cuban cigars into Thailand without declaring them to customs authorities.

According to Thailand’s Customs Department, the passenger arrived from Hong Kong on June 13. During a baggage inspection, officers discovered six packages containing imported cigars of various brands and types.

The total value of the seized tobacco products was estimated at approximately 1.2 million baht. Authorities did not disclose the exact number of cigars found, nor did they release the suspect’s name or age.

Customs officials have initiated legal proceedings against the traveler for importing goods into Thailand without completing the required customs procedures. The case falls under the provisions of Thailand’s Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017) and related regulations governing the import of restricted and taxable products.

Cigars are among the most heavily taxed tobacco products in Thailand. In addition to import duties, they are subject to excise taxes and other government charges, significantly increasing their retail prices compared with those in many neighboring countries.

Authorities continue to emphasize strict enforcement of customs regulations at international airports in an effort to prevent smuggling and ensure compliance with Thai import laws.
