Chinese Couple Arrested in Thailand for Staging Kidnapping Scam to Extort Ransom

A 19-year-old Chinese woman, her boyfriend, and several alleged accomplices have been arrested in Thailand after staging a fake kidnapping to extort money from her family.

The case was announced on April 16 by Thailand’s Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), with additional details reported by local media. According to investigators, the scheme began in late March when the woman’s father received a message claiming his daughter had been abducted in Thailand and taken to Myanmar, a location often associated with scam operations targeting foreigners.

To make the threat credible, the perpetrators sent the father a video showing the young woman being assaulted by a supposed captor. Believing the situation to be real, he transferred 110,000 yuan (approximately 550,000 baht) in ransom. However, the promised release never followed, prompting him to report the case to Chinese authorities, who then coordinated with Thai police.

By analysing the video, investigators were able to identify both the location and the individuals involved. Police later raided a rented house in Samut Prakan, where the suspects had relocated after filming the footage in Bangkok.

Inside the property, officers found the woman, her 29-year-old boyfriend—identified as the man seen in the video—and four other Chinese nationals. Several of them, including the main suspects, were unable to produce passports and were initially detained for illegal entry into Thailand.

During questioning, the boyfriend admitted that he had orchestrated the fake kidnapping and personally carried out the staged assault. Both he and the woman later confessed that the entire scenario had been fabricated to deceive her father and obtain money.

Thai authorities are now considering deportation for those involved, although it remains unclear how many of the suspects will face formal charges before removal from the country.
