Australian Tourist Refunded After Phuket Taxi Overcharge

An Australian tourist has received a refund after a Phuket taxi driver reportedly charged him 3,500 baht for a journey that should have cost around 800 baht. The case has sparked criticism from Thai residents, who questioned whether returning the excess fare should be enough to resolve a possible legal violation.

The incident was reported by several local news outlets over the weekend. The 26-year-old Australian was visiting Phuket for the first time and arrived through Phuket International Airport.

At the airport, the tourist told a Thai taxi driver that he wanted to travel to Soi Ta Aied in Chalong. The driver reportedly quoted a fare of 3,500 baht.

According to reports, the driver persuaded the tourist to accept the price by claiming that his taxi was the last available service at the airport and that the Australian would not be able to reach his destination if he declined the ride.

Unfamiliar with Phuket, the tourist agreed. He later spoke with local residents and other visitors and learned that the amount he had paid was far above the usual fare.

The journey from Phuket International Airport to Soi Ta Aied was reported to cover around 40 kilometres, with the normal fare said to be less than 1,000 baht.

The Phuket Provincial Land Transport Office summoned the driver for a meeting on September 14. During the meeting, the driver met the Australian, apologised and returned the difference between the amount charged and what he said was the correct fare.

The driver stated that the proper fare was 800 baht and refunded 2,700 baht to the tourist. The Australian accepted the apology and reportedly agreed to withdraw the legal proceedings.

The outcome, however, prompted criticism on social media and among Thai residents. Some questioned why returning the money was considered sufficient when the driver's actions could have constituted a violation of the law.

Others argued that the driver might not have returned the excess money if the case had not received widespread attention online.

As of September 14, the Phuket Provincial Land Transport Office had not confirmed whether the driver would face any additional legal action or penalties over the incident.
