American Tourist Found Dead in Patong Hotel Room After Five Days Unseen

An American tourist was found dead inside his hotel room in Patong after staff had not seen him for around five days and he failed to check out as scheduled. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of death.

Patong Police in Kathu district were notified at around 1:50pm on September 7 after the Patong police radio centre received a report about a hotel guest who had not left his room for approximately five days and had missed his scheduled checkout by one day.

Officers from Patong Police Station went to the hotel together with the property's legal representative. Using a spare key, they entered the room and found the American tourist's body lying unclothed on the floor in front of the television.

An initial examination found no visible wounds. Police also reported no signs of a struggle or disturbance inside the room.

According to hotel records, the man checked in on September 1 and was scheduled to check out on September 6. A housekeeper reportedly last saw him at around noon on September 2, when he was outside his room.

Police have contacted the US Embassy to assist in reaching the man's relatives. Arrangements for religious rites will be made once the necessary formalities have been completed.

Officers said a detailed investigation into the cause of death is continuing in accordance with standard legal procedures.

The case follows several similar incidents involving foreign tourists in Thailand. In August, a British tourist was found dead in a Phuket hotel room on his scheduled checkout day. Police reported no signs of a struggle or forced entry in that case.

In March, an American couple was found dead in a Pattaya hotel room after reportedly going unseen for four to five days. A farewell letter was found at the scene.
