A 35-year-old American tourist was found dead in a hotel room in Patong on October 4, the day he was due to check out. Police found no visible injuries at the scene, while the cause of death remains pending an autopsy.

Patong Police officers were called to the hotel on Ratsada Uthit 200 Pi Road at around 2pm after the man was discovered unresponsive inside his room. He was later identified as American national Smith Gray Allen.

According to police, Allen was found lying on the bed wearing only shorts. He had checked into the hotel alone, and nobody else was inside the room when officers arrived.

Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from outside the room and reportedly found no indication that anyone had entered or left before Allen was discovered. Hotel staff told police that he had been scheduled to check out on October 4.

Police examined the room together with a duty doctor and documented the scene. No visible wounds were found on the body, while investigators reportedly found no signs of a struggle or theft inside the room.

The circumstances surrounding Allen’s death remain under investigation. The body was later taken by Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a detailed autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Police have also contacted the United States Embassy to assist Allen’s relatives with arrangements for repatriating his body.

The case comes amid several other reports of foreign nationals dying in Phuket hotels in recent months.

On September 17, a 63-year-old Swedish national was reportedly found seriously injured at a hotel in the Bang Tao area. The man initially declined medical treatment before his condition deteriorated. He was taken to hospital the following day but later died from his injuries.

Earlier in September, another American national was found dead at a hotel in Patong. Police investigated the case, although no further details were provided in the source material.

In August, hotel staff found a British tourist dead inside a Phuket hotel room after he had reportedly placed a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door. Staff became concerned when he remained in the room beyond his scheduled checkout date and subsequently discovered his body.
