Thailand Marks Visakha Bucha with Temple Ceremonies and Alcohol Restrictions

Buddhists across Thailand are celebrating Visakha Bucha, one of the most important religious holidays in the Buddhist calendar. Morning ceremonies were held at temples nationwide, while candlelit processions are expected to take place later in the evening.

Visakha Bucha commemorates three key events in the life of the Buddha — his birth, enlightenment, and passing into Nirvana. According to Buddhist tradition, all three events occurred on the full moon of the sixth lunar month, although in different years.

This year, the sixth lunar full moon falls on Sunday, May 31. Because the holiday coincides with a weekend, Monday, June 1, has been designated as a substitute public holiday, allowing government offices and many public institutions to remain closed for an additional day.

Although the long weekend extends into Monday, the religious observance itself lasts only on May 31. The nationwide ban on alcohol sales is also enforced exclusively on that date.

Under current regulations, alcohol sales remain prohibited at most shops and retail outlets throughout the day.

However, several categories of venues are exempt from the restriction, including:

• Duty-free and licensed outlets at international airports

• Licensed hotels and resort properties

• Licensed entertainment venues and similar establishments

• Officially approved event locations

In Phuket, the exemptions primarily apply to hotels and selected licensed nightlife venues.

Businesses that violate the alcohol sales ban may face penalties of up to 10,000 baht in fines, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
