Phuket Taxi Driver Wins Hearts After Giving Tourists a Free Ride to Wat Chalong

A Phuket taxi driver has received widespread praise after offering three foreign visitors a complimentary ride to Wat Chalong when they admitted they could not afford the fare.

The touching encounter took place on June 29 and was later shared on Facebook by user Pichaiphorn Chanproong. The video, filmed near the Pearl Circle roundabout in Patong, quickly gained attention across social media.

According to the footage, the three tourists stopped the taxi and explained that they wanted to visit Wat Chalong but had no money to pay for the trip. Instead of turning them away, the driver immediately responded with a smile, telling them not to worry and offering to take them there free of charge.

The visitors accepted the unexpected gesture and boarded the taxi. During the journey, they asked if they could record the driver, documenting the memorable experience.

After arriving at Wat Chalong, the tourists expressed their gratitude by shaking the driver's hand and performing a traditional Thai wai, a respectful gesture that impressed many viewers once the video was published online.

The clip quickly went viral, with thousands of social media users praising the driver's generosity and describing his actions as an example of the kindness and hospitality for which Thailand is well known.

Speaking to KhaoPhuket after the video attracted attention, the driver explained that he simply wanted to help visitors to the country.

"They came to Thailand to travel. If we have the opportunity to help, we should. I always imagine what it would be like if I were visiting another country. I don't know whether they truly had no money, but if you can help someone, why not?" he said.

The story follows another widely shared example of Thai hospitality earlier this year, when an Australian couple praised a local taxi driver who welcomed them warmly despite language differences and even treated them to traditional Thai desserts during their journey.
