Phuket Residents and Tourists Join Sacred Closing Ceremony of Vegetarian Festival 2026
Phuket residents and visitors gathered for the traditional ceremony marking the end of the 2026 Vegetarian Festival, one of the island’s most significant annual religious and cultural events.

The closing ritual, commonly known as the ceremony of “sending the gods back”, brought crowds to shrine grounds and surrounding streets to take part in the final observances. The ceremony symbolises the farewell to deities believed to have visited Phuket to protect and bless the island throughout the nine-day festival.
Participants and spectators came together to honour traditions associated with spiritual devotion and strict vegetarian practices observed during the festival period. The atmosphere combined solemn religious rituals with the lively community spirit that characterises the annual celebration.

The closing ceremony also reflected the importance of preserving customs passed down through generations. For many local families, the festival remains an opportunity to reaffirm their faith, maintain cultural identity and share Phuket’s distinctive heritage with visitors from across Thailand and abroad.
The 2026 celebrations once again highlighted the enduring role of the Vegetarian Festival in Phuket’s cultural life, bringing residents and tourists together in a shared expression of respect for local traditions.
