Urgent Call for O-Negative Blood Donors to Save Injured Tourist in Phuket

The expat community in Phuket has launched an urgent appeal for blood donors with type O-negative to help save the life of a foreign tourist seriously injured in a road accident.

The call for help began circulating on March 29 across Russian- and English-speaking Facebook groups. The patient, identified as Gert Geers, is currently awaiting surgery at Bangkok Hospital Phuket.

Critical shortage of rare blood type

The hospital relies on supplies from the regional Red Cross blood bank, but there is currently no O-negative blood available. This blood type is extremely rare in Thailand, with less than 1% of the population having it.

Volunteers are being asked to donate blood directly through the Red Cross and clearly specify that the donation is intended for Gert Geers, to ensure it is allocated to his treatment.

Urgent medical needs

According to one of the organizers of the appeal, the patient requires immediate surgery to repair a carotid artery and treat multiple fractures in his limbs.

The request emphasizes that no financial assistance is needed — only blood donations are critical at this stage.

Donation details

Donors are advised to give blood through the Phuket Red Cross blood center. At the time of writing, no updated schedule for mobile donation units in April has been announced.

The most recent Red Cross notice invited donations in honor of Princess Sirindhorn’s upcoming birthday on April 2, when she will turn 71. She serves as Vice President and Director of the Thai Red Cross.

The community continues to urge anyone with O-negative blood to come forward as quickly as possible to help save the patient’s life.
