Thai National Park Debunks Viral “Phi Phi Airport” Hoax

Authorities from Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park have officially dismissed viral claims suggesting that Phi Phi Island is set to receive an international airport.

The clarification followed the spread of an Instagram post published on April 1, 2026, which claimed that construction of an airport on the island would begin on May 1. The post included what appeared to be an image of the proposed site. Officials confirmed that the image was artificially generated and does not represent any real location.

According to the park authorities, the area depicted resembles a stretch of land between Ton Sai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay on Phi Phi Don. However, this zone is privately owned and already developed, hosting hotels, restaurants, a hospital, and other facilities. As such, it is not suitable for any large-scale infrastructure project like an airport.
Officials also emphasized that the geography of the national park makes such development impossible. Much of the terrain consists of steep limestone cliffs and mountainous landscapes, which are incompatible with runway construction or aircraft operations.
The park administration stressed that the airport claim has no factual basis and urged the public to verify information through official sources before sharing it online. Authorities also reminded that misleading content can spread quickly and damage public understanding.

The rumor is believed to be linked to April Fools' Day, when jokes and hoaxes are commonly shared online. However, Thai officials noted that such misinformation can have real consequences and should be treated responsibly.
