Authorities in Phuket have released a new warning about venomous jellyfish after a large concentration was discovered near Racha Yai Island, raising safety concerns for tourists and marine operators.

The advisory was issued by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) on March 23, just days after a similar alert regarding Maiton Island. In both locations, officials identified jellyfish from the Pelagidae family, commonly known as “fire jellyfish.”

According to reports, the density of these jellyfish reached approximately 50 individuals per 100 meters near Racha Yai, compared to around 40 per 100 meters previously recorded near Maiton. Despite their relatively small size, these jellyfish can cause painful stings upon contact.

Authorities are urging visitors to exercise extreme caution when entering the water, as accidental contact may result in burns, irritation, and discomfort.

Officials have also shared clear first-aid guidelines in case of a jellyfish sting, based on recommendations from the DMCR and Phuket Lifeguard Service.

What to do if stung by a jellyfish:

  1. Seek help from beach lifeguards immediately, as they are trained and equipped to respond.

  2. If no lifeguards are available, rinse the affected area with seawater as soon as possible. Do not use fresh water.

  3. Apply vinegar to the sting area for at least 30 seconds. Vinegar may be available at nearby cafes or restaurants. Avoid rubbing or touching the affected skin.

  4. After leaving the beach, seek medical attention at the nearest hospital or clinic. In case of severe symptoms, call emergency services at 1669.

  5. If the person is not breathing or has no pulse, call emergency services immediately and begin CPR until help arrives.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and stress the importance of following safety advice to reduce risks and ensure safe travel experiences in Phuket’s coastal areas.
