Authorities in Phuket have launched a large-scale operation to tackle illegal land encroachment at Freedom Beach, located within the protected Nakkerd Mountain National Forest Reserve.

The initiative began on March 26 after local residents filed complaints about land being unlawfully occupied and intimidation allegedly carried out by influential groups. In response, Phuket Governor Nirut Laopongsitthathorn ordered a joint task force to investigate the situation.

The inspection was led by Mueang Phuket District Chief Siwatch Rawangkul, together with senior officials, forestry officers, and local representatives.

During the operation, officials identified several serious breaches of the law:

  • Illegal deforestation and land occupation in violation of the Forest Act

  • Unauthorized construction of residential and commercial structures within protected land

  • The presence of four elephants, raising concerns over their welfare and possible commercial use

Legal action is now being taken against those involved.

Authorities emphasized that the crackdown is aimed not only at preserving natural resources but also at ensuring the safety and rights of local residents.

Officials stated their intention to strictly enforce the law against offenders and influential figures, with the goal of restoring order and fairness in the area.

Residents reported that they have been unable to access their own land due to threats and pressure. Some also mentioned the presence of armed individuals, which has heightened fear within the community.

They called on the government to take decisive measures to protect their livelihoods and guarantee their safety.
