Phuket Airport Denies Fast-Track Fee Allegations Amid Immigration Delays

Phuket Airport immigration authorities have rejected accusations that staff were charging passengers for fast-track services during long queues at passport control.

The statement came on March 29 after social media users criticized the situation on March 28, claiming that travelers were being encouraged to pay 200 baht for expedited processing.
Cause of the delays
According to the Immigration Bureau, the congestion in the international departures area was caused by a temporary failure in the online processing system during peak hours.
The disruption lasted from 8:55am to 1:40pm, a period during which approximately 52 outbound flights with around 8,500 passengers were scheduled.

Measures taken
Officials said that during the outage, all 18 immigration counters were fully staffed and operating manually in line with standard procedures. Even under these conditions, each passport was processed in about 33 seconds.

However, since the passport control area is designed to handle only around 600 people at a time, queues quickly formed and extended into other parts of the terminal.
Denial of paid fast-track claims
Authorities firmly denied reports that passengers were being charged for access to special fast-track lanes.
In an official statement, immigration officials stressed that no such fees were collected and that all staff acted strictly within legal and regulatory frameworks.
Passengers were also encouraged to report any suspected misconduct for further investigation.
Ongoing discussion
The controversy gained traction after several online sources reported the alleged 200-baht fast-track service, prompting public debate.
At the same time, expedited airport services — including fast-track options and VIP lounge access for higher fees — are commonly promoted in travel blogs and commercial channels, which added to the confusion surrounding the situation.
A local member of parliament has reportedly been informed of the issue and may initiate a formal review.
