Authorities are investigating the cause of a major fire that broke out in Phuket Town on the afternoon of March 27, with early reports suggesting a possible electric motorcycle battery explosion.

The blaze started around 1:00pm at a three-storey commercial building on Thepkrasattri Road. According to local reports, firefighters managed to bring the situation under control within about 30 minutes. However, updates from public relations officials indicated that crews were still working to fully extinguish the fire later in the afternoon.

Fire impact and response

Traffic along Thepkrasattri Road in the city area was restricted for several hours as emergency teams handled the situation.

One person was injured in the incident. Officials reported that a man, approximately 70 years old, suffered burns and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The fire caused damage to the building, which houses a branch of Mueang Thai Capital, as well as to vehicles parked both in front of the property and on the ground floor.

Possible cause under investigation

While forensic experts have not yet confirmed the exact cause, initial findings suggest the fire may have been triggered by an exploding battery from an electric motorcycle parked near the side of the building.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise shortly before the fire broke out, believed to have come from the parked motorcycle. The flames then quickly spread, engulfing the ground floor of the structure.

Details about the motorcycle’s model and ownership have not been disclosed, and the total financial damage remains unknown.
