Tourist police in Phuket have arrested a French national who had overstayed his visa, using facial recognition technology to identify the violation.

The arrest took place on March 30 on Bangla Road in Patong. According to authorities, the 27-year-old man had remained in Thailand 42 days beyond his permitted stay.
Police reported that the suspect was detected through a mobile AI-powered camera installed on a patrol vehicle. While officials did not specify the exact type of vehicle used, similar systems in other tourist areas are typically mounted on immigration or police cars to scan faces in real time.

This case has been described as a milestone operation, showcasing the effective use of modern surveillance technology in law enforcement. It marks one of the first publicly reported arrests in Phuket involving such mobile facial recognition systems.
Under Thailand’s “Good Guys In, Bad Guys Out” policy, the French national now faces serious consequences. In addition to a fine of up to 20,000 baht, he is expected to be deported and banned from re-entering the country for five years.

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the individual. Legal proceedings are ongoing in accordance with Thai immigration law, which treats visa overstays as a criminal offense.
